I sat in an Executive team meeting once, after you left, and someone - I can't remember who - started a strategy conversation with "as we are all progressives in this room" and continued without stopping to make plans. I remember thinking: "noone ever asked me if I was a progressive". The most irritating thing about self proclaimed progressives is that they don't listen - they make assumptions that there is a universality of goodness loaded into that term - entirely uncritically. I'm glad you've had that Damascene moment, I look forward to where it takes you.
